CYCLING IN LUCCA

Hi everybody.  We got away to a leisurely start from Pisa this morning and headed for Lucca where, this time, we did find a parking area which had room for us although the signs seemed to say that motorhomes couldn’t park there. If they want us to obey rules, they’ll have to print them in clear English.
Lucca is a typical 1000 year old Italian walled city. What is different about it is that the wall is still entirely intact and provides an excellent four kilometre walking/riding trail around the city. With a great deal of arm twisting, I talked Trish into spending 5 euros and hiring two bikes. The pictures are on the blog.
Once we had circumnavigated the wall I was able to convince her that she could still ride a bike and we tackled the narrow lanes of the town. What fun. Almost felt like a local.

From there, we headed for Porto Venere for our first close up view of the Mediterranean. Unfortunately we didn’t get as close as we wanted to because of the lack of parking facilities for our giant motorhome but we did get veery close to the wing mirror of a bus. If I can erase the evidence, the motorhome owner will never know! It wasn’t the bus driver’s fault. It was the fault of the motor scooter on the other side.
The water and scenery looked fabulous but the beaches and the people on them looked a little odd.
We are now in the very quaint Camping Arenalla in the hills behind Deiva Marina parked beside the babbling brook which flows through it – very picturesque and peaceful. The Sea is quite close but we haven’t seen it yet. We will have plenty of opportunity to see it tomorrow when we attack the Cinque Terre trails which link the five villages which comprise it.
