Those among
you who are avid and observant followers will have noticed that the timing of
these posts has become a little erratic. That’s because we persist in finding
spectacular National Parks in which to camp and they tend to be in fairly
obscure places without phone coverage and therefore no access to internet.
Tonight we
have done it again. We are at Saltery Bay back on the mainland. It is part of
the area on the western edge of the mainland facing Vancouver Island generally
described as the Sunshine Coast. The camp ground has the passage as its western
boundary. We weren’t planning to return to the mainland until tomorrow but we
discovered a ferry which brought us back to not far from where we need to
return the motorhome so here we are – an impromptu change of plans.
The Park
supervisor just dropped in to collect our $18:00 fee. We asked him about the scuba
diving here. The area is apparently noted for it and the water looks appealing.
He said that, once you are several metres underwater, the water temperature is
a uniform 8 degrees all year. I’m not going for a dive.
This morning
we set out to find Horne Caves and succeeded. The caves are a system of
limestone caves but, with the exception of a ladder to get into the hole which
is the entrance to the cave which we toured, there are no artificial
enhancements, no paths, railings or lights. We clambered over and down rocks to
see the usual limestone formations, a different experience well worth having.
Tomorrow we
will be doing the washing, cleaning up the van and generally getting ready for
the transition to how the other half live. We will need to break out our
respectable wardrobe. Trish would even like to do some ironing. What a change
it will be from the last three weeks.
