This is a
photo of the main street of Skagway (Broadway St.) It was busy because there
were two cruise ships in town. Check the lack of cars. There are no pedestrian
crossings. The main street is like a pedestrian mall with just the occasional
vehicle appearing.
A day of
surprises today, two of which were that the sun shone for most of the day
(apparently that almost never happens in Skagway) and, as we sat in a coach,
the woman in the photo who was sitting behind us said “Are you Michael?”. It turned
out to be Terri Crae, a good friend of John and Virginia Lamb who happens to be
on the same cruise. Small world.
The main
activity today was a trip on the White Pass railroad described in the brochures
as The Scenic Railway of the World. It travelled through the usual spectacular
country with mountains on one side and gorges on the other. What was a little
unusual is that the carriages have an open platform at each end where you can stand
and take photos from. Great fun.
Once over
the summit, we were collected by coach and taken to a suspension bridge which,
if we hadn’t seen so many already, would have been quite impressive.
For those
interested, the temperature was 14 degrees but much warmer than that in the sun.
Tomorrow we
get to what could possibly be the highlight of the cruise, Glacier Bay. Hopefully the weather will continue to be kind to us.
