We woke this
morning to a gloomy looking morning and the gloominess was confirmed (as I suspected
that it would be) when we were told that our planned helicopter glacier tour
was cancelled because of the weather. We can’t understand why they couldn’t
fly.
The ice
field to which we were to fly was just over the mountain to the left in the
photo below.
We consoled ourselves by spending the morning
exploring the town including a trip up the Mt.Roberts aerial tramway. We observed
the usual warnings about bears in the vicinity but, of course, none appeared.
The
highlight of the day was the whale watching tour we did this afternoon, the
first tour we booked with Princess Cruises that we actually got to go on. It
was really well done and we saw killer whales, sea lions and humpback whales as
the photos show.
Tomorrow we
wake up at Skagway and have a train trip up White Horse Pass to Yukon booked.
We strongly expect that it won’t be cancelled because of weather.
On the
subject of weather, it has actually been incredibly kind to us in that there
has been no rain and we even see patches of sunlight. For this part of the world,
that is exceptionally good. It’s just the elevated areas where the glaciers are
that are shrouded in cloud.
