This
morning we went to Yankee Harbour on Greenwich Island, one of the
South Shetland islands. Once again, it was a site formerly used by
whalers with some whaling relics on shore. What was different about
this morning was that, for the first time this week, we weren't
walking in snow. The beach had some ice on it but was primarily
gravel. We spent 90 minutes watching the behaviour of the Gentoo
penguins there. I got some good movie footage of them getting into
and out of the water.
We
then did the customary zodiac cruise and spent the whole time
focussed on a couple of hump back whales in feeding mode. How many
photos of whales would you like to see?
This
afternoon we went to Half Moon Island where, once again, we got up
close and personal with thousands of Chinstrap penguins and one
solitary Macaroni penguin which, for some reason, has taken up
residence in the Chinstrap colony It was a very appropriate last
expedition in that it was snowing the whole time and we got cold and
wet. It really made us appreciate how good the weather has been for
the other four and a half days of expeditions.
That's
it for the expeditions and the fantastic experiences they each were.
Tonight we start back across the Drake Passage heading back to
Ishuaia and then on to Buenos Aires and then in turn on to Lima where
the next phase of our adventure will begin.
There
may not be anything of note to report over the next few days. What I
am looking forward to is an internet connection good enough to share
some photos.
