Today
was day two of the two day tickets we purchased for the hop on hop
off bus so that part of our adventure has come to an end. The buses
today were somewhat more crowded than yesterday. It might have
something to do with the five cruise ships which suddenly appeared
overnight. We have now bought two day tickets for the local metro/bus
system so we will be giving that a go tomorrow and Sunday.
After
topping up the shopping this morning, we headed for the Placa
D'Cascades at the top of which is the National Museum of Art from the
front of which one has excellent views of the city.
A system of
cascades flows down to a large fountain which is apparently quite a
spectacle at night. Given that it doesn't get dark until 9:30, we
won't get to see it. I have included some photos of us just to show
that we were there.
From
there we got back on the bus and headed for the green route which
took us along the beach to what was formerly an industrial area now
transformed into an upmarket high rise tourist and residential area.
We went for a stroll along the beach front and were very positively
impressed. They have sand on the beaches but why have concrete beach chairs?.
The swimming beach area for
the 3 million people who live in the Barcelona region is only 5
kilometres long so, as you would expect, the beach was reasonably
well populated, even for a weekday. No surf of course.
We
stopped at one of the “on beach”cafes for a beer/coffee before
getting back on the bus and heading for the narrow streets of the
Gothic part of the old town – very interesting and very different
from the not quite so old section.
Tomorrow's plan is yet to unfold but it will include the exploration of the port area.
