SUNDAY 10TH - NAPLES / POMPEII
The
photo above shows our humble abode docked in Naples Harbour with Mt.
Vesuvius in the background. Apparently the last eruption, which was
quite a small one, was in 1944. The next one is expected to be a big
one. Hopefully we will be out of here before that happens.
Today
was a double barrelled day in that we spent this morning at Pompeii
as part of an Holland America organised tour. It was a bit of a rush
to get through what the guide wanted to get through in the two hours
on site but it was well organised and we had an informative and
entertaining time. The guide had a very stressful time keeping track
of her group but it was fun for us.
The
photos make it look deserted but it was anything but.
We
have now done the two – Pompeii and Herculaneum.
After
lunch back on the ship, we went for a wander around the closer part
of Naples. The back streets of the old town looked intriguing and
deserved more time but we can't do everything.
The
find of the wander was the Basicilia of St Francis, a miniature St.
Peters, just up the road. Unfortunately, even though it was Sunday, it was closed but, if the
outside is any indication, it would be pretty impressive on the
inside. It was located on a Piazza directly opposite the Royal
Palace.
Tomorrow
we will be in Taormina, Sicily where we have a tour booked to drive
to Mt. Etna. It's great fun waking up in a different place every
morning.
