Today we experimented with a visit to Toulon without using any of the very expensive tour options offered by Holland America and it was very successful.
They
provided a free shuttle boat service from where we are docked at
Seyne La Mer to the dockside in the old town of Toulon. As we left
the ship we passed an information desk where we were told about the
attractions of Toulon and we simply followed their directions to the
tourism office from where we obtained a combination bus/telepherique
ticket and rode the number 40 bus to the telepherique lower station
and up the spectacular mountain range to the north of Toulon.
Needless to say the views of the town, the Mediterranean and the ship
from the top were spectacular.
After
returning to the town, we enjoyed lunch being fruit we took with us
from the ship on the harbour's edge and then explored the old city.
Before
returning to the ship, we bought several bottles of wine which, when
bought back to the ship, attracts a corkage charge of $18 per bottle
but, even paying that, it is cheaper to buy wine on shore and pay the
corkage than to pay shipboard prices.
Tomorrow we will be in Monte Carlo. I am told one has to take photos of the cars parked outside the casino. They are apparently quite special. We are told that there are approximately 300 Aussies on the ship which would explain why the Aussie accent is so prevalent.
