Today was a little different in that Livorno is very much a working port being the second biggest in Italy after Genoa so it was less of a tourist destination than towns previously visited. It is the access point for Pisa, Florence and Lucca but, as previously stated, we have explored those so we left Bernie and Colleen to do those on their own. We entertained ourselves in Livorna.
It
is a town 85% of which was destroyed by bombing in the second world
war so there is relatively little “old town”. What it does have
of interest is a canal system formerly used to get freight to
shipping before the days of modern ports. Today the canals are a
parking area for local pleasure boats and the town's only tourism
feature of significance. There is an obvious comparison to Venice but
hardly comparable. Livorno has a well developed road system used for
transport.
We
had a very pleasant tour of the canals and gained a lot of
information about the history of Livorno.
We
headed for the beaches but the ones we got close to were enclosed in
“bathing reserves” which you had to pay to get into. We weren't
that keen to see another beach. Check out the irony of the radar on top of the otherwise derelict building.
Tomorrow
we will be in Civitivecchia, being the access port for Rome. Once
again, we have spent a bit of time in Rome so won't be going there
either. We will see what Civi... has to offer.
