Day14 – MORE OF THE NULLABOR

Sunset on the Nullabor. Two weeks down. Five to go.How time flies when you are having fun.

Tonight we are at Caiguna, approximately 250 kms east of Norseman, the first major town one comes to after crossing the Nullabor. All that is here as far as I can see is a roadhouse with a camping ground behind and basic facilities but we have electricity and good showers so what more could one want?

There is a sign on the laundry door asking that the door be kept closed to keep out the snakes! And the van light is attracting lots of bugs. We are obviously in the Western Australian outback.

Today was spectacular. We started by heading 10 kms north of the Nullabor Roadhouse along a bush track to Murrawijinie Caves. They don’t compare with the Jenolan Caves but what is impressive is that, as you approach them, you see nothing until you realize that there is a large sinkhole in the otherwise flat terrain. Once you get a few kilometres from the roadhouse, you really appreciate the terrain in that the 360 degree horizon is completely flat.

We then went to the Head of the Bight Interpretive Centre, a very well set up building and walkway which overlooks the Great Australian Bight and the cliffs where the Nullabor meets the ocean. A highlight of the area is the viewing of whales but unfortunately, we are a little early for them.

From there we headed west and visited various spectacular locations where the road is very close to the cliffs. The photos tell the story.

This afternoon was spent in our mobile arm chairs getting kilometres behind us. Tomorrow we rejoin the coast at Esperance and head west towards Albany and Margaret River. Is there a river at Margaret River? All I have heard about is the wine.
